During the early part of the 20th century, subway constructions are busy in the cities of the US east coast.  In order to minimize excavation cost, often times elevated train tracks are built above street level for the subway  trains to travel. Movie fans of the latest version of the famed KingKong film surely remember seeing the scene  of trains traveling on such elevated tracks. However, these tracks are eye sores and gradually fell into disuse. In Boston, these elevated tracks were torn down and the lane underneath converted into patches of green gardens in a urban setting known as the Rose Fitzgerald greenway in honor of the mother  of president JFK.   In the New York City, a more imaginative solution was found.  Instead of tearing down the elevated tracks, they were converted into an elevated walkway for pedestrians  with beautiful landscaped gardens, sitting places, views of busy city streets and the Hudson River .

Above all, no traffic to avoid, traffic lights to deal with, and is totally free for residents and visitors.

Because of this urban transformation, what use to be industrial buildings and dilapidated dwellings along these tracks have become prime real estate. Luxury apartment buildings began to be constructed in place with  price to match.. An one bedroom apartment starts at US$ 2 million ( see photo) .

During our recent visit to NYC , we took a walk along sections of the "highLine" . Attached are some photos taken along the way:
